Recursive creatures have a long history in Magic, providing midrange players with the grindy cards they need to win the late-game long after their opponents have emptied their hands and are limping along, just waiting to be put out of their misery
Seeing this, and myself being one of the people excitingly tabbing through reveals despite already having pre-orders running into the hundreds in place, Ive realized one thing: no matter how many cards this set encompasses, itll never be enough
It might not sound like a massive jump in power, but it's considerable in the context of the game, and it makes for a miserable experience if you're jumping back in for a couple of online battles only for meta decks with the Mega Evolved Charizard laying waste to your cards
I felt like the underdog going into this game as I knew that 2-Drops, 3-Drops, and 4-Drops had stronger card pools to work with, especially when 4-Drops was helmed by Omnath, Locus of Creation, which could easily start playing multiple 4-Drops by turn 5 and was at the right mana value to start casting board wipes regularly
It can render you basically useless if don't have any other cards, like the trainer card Misty, to generate additional energy beyond the one you get each turn
