所谓小煤窑，是指距离黄龙山约500米的一处地名，而非壶品用小煤窑烧制。因其地过去有几间烧砖瓦陶罐的小煤窑，久而久之大家便以小煤窑代称此地。这个地方从50年代开始便有零星朱泥矿出产，不过产量不大，那个时候的人对朱泥壶并不接受，做壶都以中大品为主，小煤窑朱泥开采出来，极少单独制壶，由于小煤窑朱泥粘性很强，很多都是直接加到紫泥或者清水泥里面，增加泥料的粘合性。
