I think Grillo is onto something, in that Sea Gate Oracle and Mnemonic Wall are perhaps the platonic ideals of defensive creatures

I can't imagine this Sultai commander seeing play in formats other than EDH, but it's a beast in the command zone

Hellkite Overlord I generally think Sarkhan Vol is a better card than this one, but what Sarkhan lacks is some of the wow factor that Hellkite Overlord brought to the table

It is also not about value for mana but value for card and while a 2G 2/2 is pretty comparably crap to a 1G 1/1 a 2/2 comes a lot closer to being worth a card than a 1/1 does
